Yes, that’s right, I said a Love Letter to Yourself! Such a strange concept, right? Well it shouldn’t be, and one very brave woman has recently reminded me of that.
Carrie Klassen, in her own words is the “owner of Pink Elephant Creative writing & design boutique and Pink Elephant Academy for Entrepreneurs. Lover of semi-colons and yellow sun dresses!” The bright and cheery energy that comes from this description of herself oozes out of her writing. That very energy is transferred onto the reader, which is why I had so much fun reading her recent post! That brings me to today’s topic about writing a love letter to yourself!!
I have recently started writing again and I’ve been publishing some articles onto a separate blog that is still in it’s infancy. I’m writing about what inspires me and what I receive after meditation or moments of stillness. The concept of writing a love letter to myself definitely appeals to me. This letter to “oneself” principle was so inspiring, and it got me thinking about how little self admiration we do. In fact, our very culture often frowns upon it and makes us feel guilty for tooting our own horn so to speak. As most women know we usually look in the mirror and focus on what we don’t like and what we want to change. When our spouse or friends compliment us our reaction is to graciously accept, but with the taint of skepticism lurking somewhere in our mind. So many young girls suffer from a poor self image. They compare themselves to the images on television and in magazines, but never stop to see their own beauty or appreciate what they have to offer.
Sometimes, even when you think you’re looking good on a particular day or you feel accomplished, that little voice inside you that shirks away the compliment lives on. Why do we often feel a need to shrink ourselves down? What is it that scares us about owning our own strength and acknowledging our beauty and talents? One of my favorite quotes is from a speech that Marianne Williamson wrote for Nelson Mandela years ago. I feel that this quote sums up what I’m trying to say here: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” I love this quote because it reminds me that only by being true to yourself and standing in that truth and power can you ever hope to influence or change the world around you! Beautiful!
My hope is that you sit down with yourself, your daughters and sons, and write a love letter to you from you! Below is the link to Carrie’s love letter It is sweet, honest, and loving. It’s is from her and for her! Why not, I say? The time has come to stop waiting around to be complimented or acknowledged, and to stop hiding the fact that you’re WONDERFUL. Start loving yourself more! I’m looking forward to sitting down tonight and writing my own love letter. I encourage all of you to do the same. I hope you enjoy Carrie’s love letter as much as I did and that it inspires you to write your own today!
Here it is… Enjoy: Dear Carrie
